TSL Subtitle Routing Automation & Tier-4 Rated Data Centre Power for Sony Pictures Networks India

TSL delivered an innovative project to automate subtitle routing in a complex IP-based environment for Sony Pictures Networks India (‘Sony PNI’) as part of the modernisation of its playout operations at its new facility in Mumbai, alongside deployment of TSL’s intelligent, managed PDUs to help achieve Tier 4 certification.

Subtitle Routing Automation

The automation project delivered improved reliability and accuracy, flexibility and efficiency in a complex multi-language, 20-channel environment.

Previously, staff had to manually adjust subtitle control paths when switching between playout servers, a labour-intensive process prone to errors and delays.

To address this, Sony PNI worked with TSL on this project solution to automate subtitle path routing in real-time, ensuring multi-language synchronisation with active video sources. This interoperable system allows Sony India to integrate best-of-breed technology across multiple vendors, avoiding lock-in while maximising flexibility and efficiency. In addition, the solution was designed to provide automated failover and system-wide visibility for added resiliency.

What makes this project pioneering is its ability to seamlessly unify disparate systems, and innovatively deploy network address translation (‘NAT’) routing technology while eliminating manual operational tasks to deliver improved speed, accuracy and reliability. The transition to fully automated subtitle management ensures consistent playout, minimises human error, and enhances Sony PNI’s ability to scale for future needs.

“TSL’s Control Solution has transformed Sony Pictures Networks India’s subtitle management, eliminating manual errors and ensuring real-time accuracy across our multi-language broadcasts.”Matthew Quade, CEO, TSL

Sony PNI chose TSL for this production automation project to deploy TSL’s GTP-V1 virtual control platform (winner of NAB Best in Show 2024) and Anything-to-Anything production automation application with newly developed, innovative software (developed in TSL R&D by Marianna Zlatkina with infrastructure support from Kent Stork), to interface with Imagine Communications’ Versio playout solution, Grass Valley’s Sirius Routers, Skyline Communications’ Dataminer and Broadstream’s Polistream subtitle delivery system.

From TSL’s Customer Delivery Team, Maurice Snell worked with the Sony PNI team under the leadership of Gaurav Sahni (Senior Vice President & Head of Broadcast Operations & Technology) to design and scope the project while Randy Rodriguez and Paramveer Singh of TSL worked alongside Sony PNI’s own team to test, deploy and configure the solution.

Anything-to-Anything

TSL’s Anything-to-Anything acts as the centralised routing intelligence, dynamically monitoring active video paths and using NAT routing to automatically align the correct closed caption encoder to the correct playout channel in real-time.

The uniqueness of this project is in the vendor-agnostic interoperability and IP-based production automation provided, enabling Sony to flexibly integrate and deploy existing assets and solutions in the most efficient way possible without having to redesign an entire workflow ecosystem, all while delivering improved speed, accuracy, reliability and efficiency with the elimination of manual tasks.

Key technologies deployed include:

  • TSL’s Control Solution – Providing dynamic, real-time subtitle routing and seamless integration within Sony’s multi-platform infrastructure.
  • Intelligent Change Over Power Distribution Units (PDUs) – Supporting Sony’s 400% power redundancy strategy, ensuring uninterrupted operations during live sports and high-stakes broadcasts.
  • By eliminating manual intervention in subtitle routing, increasing system resilience, and enabling greater flexibility in broadcast automation, this project has set a new industry benchmark for multi-language playout operations. Its impact was elsewhere recognised when Sony India received the Excellence in Broadcasting award at the Digital Studio India M&E Awards.
